The launch of this sport tourism event which comprises approximately 3000 participants this year compared to 2500 last year, was held on Friday, 15 June 2012 in a glittering event to officially set this 10-day action-packed sporting event in motion.

This year’s Oudtshoorn Sport Festival which takes place between 21 June and 01 July 2012, features the following sport games and championshiops; Inte-Provincial Gymnastics, Western Cape Karate Championship, Western Cape Development and Provincial Boxing Tournament, Western Cape Schools Table Tennis Tournament, Western Cape Development Netball Tournament, Inter-Provincial Martial Arts, SA Junior Inter-Provincial Cycling, Western Cape Regional Football, Inter-club Action Cricket, ASWD/Oudtshoorn Road Running Challenge and Latin Dance and Ballroom (World Trials).

Financial support for the festival has equally grown as the Oudtshoorn Municipality secured two additional sponsorships for the festival. Standard Bank which has always been financially supporting the festival has again joined hands with the municipality to support this year’s festival. New sponsors to the festival are the Western Cape Pronvincial Government and Petro SA.

The Sport Festival focuses on youth, tourism, social development and transformation in line with the aim of the Oudtshoorn Municipality to position Oudtshoorn as the sport mecca of the Southern Cape is underway.

The idea of a sport festival emanated from a youth festival that took place a few years ago which attracted not only local participation, but also participants from other parts of the country, as well as outside of South Africa. Oudtshoorn, a home to the widely known and probably the biggest arts festival in the country, the Absa Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees and other festivals, including the Klein Karoo Klassique and the  Oudtshoorn Sport Festival is steadily but surely claiming to be one of the festival town in the country.

“Oudtshoorn sports festival is a sports tourism event that focuses on the youth, tourism, social development and transformation in the context of making Oudtshoorn the sports Mecca of the Southern Cape,” said Mr. Deon Lott, the acting Municipal Manager.

“The festival also promises to offer concrete marketing and revenue generation opportunities for local retail, hospitality and financial businesses.”

Lott concluded: “Furthermore it needs to be stated that Oudtshoorn has got the sport infrastructure to host most of the major and less- major sport played in the country, which is a definite plus to the town’s strategy to position itself as the sport mecca of the Southern Cape/Karoo. This, together with the moderate climate during the winter season, makes Oudtshoorn a perfect destination for sport events.”
