odn_sportfestival_a_smallMore than 500 gymnasts from Eastern Province, Western Province, Boland and South Western Districts have arrived in Oudtshoorn for the kick off of the first event of the second Oudtshoorn Sport Festival which started on Thursday, 23 June at 08:00 at De Jager Indoor Sport Centre.

In this year’s Sport Festival more than 2500 sport men and women from national and provincial teams will converge in Oudtshoorn to participate in the following sport codes: Gymnastics, karate, table tennis, cycling, 7’s rugby, soccer, action cricket, ballroom and netball.

The Oudtshoorn Sport Festival is an annual event which is organised by the Oudtshoorn Municipality in conjunction with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs & Sport, Oudtshoorn Sport Council and regional and provincial sport federations. Oudtshoorn Municipality has invested over R 400 000 in this year’s Sport Festival and Standard Bank has contributed an extra amount of R 100 000.

Standard Bank has this week (20 June) handed over a cheque of R 100 000 to Oudtshoorn Municipality for the second Oudtshoorn Sport Festival.

The executive manager of Standard Bank, Mr. Dominic du Plessis, described the Sport Festival as a noble and prestigious event and he added: “We are acutely aware of the need to sponsor this event for the benefit of the community in partnership with the Oudtshoorn Municipality and we hope to continue to the future.”

odn_sportfestival_b_smallOn receipt of the cheque the Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn, Alderman Gordon April, said: “What we are witnessing tonight is exactly the type of progress we, as leaders of this town, would like to see. From here we can only join hands together in making sure that the community of the Greater Oudtshoorn benefit in our endeavours to make Oudtshoorn the Sport Mecca of the Southern Cape.”

Demonstrating its sincere gratitude for the financial support from Standard Bank, Oudtshoorn Municipality surprised Standard Bank with a certificate of appreciation and recognition of loyalty towards the Oudtshoorn Sport Festival.

The karate event, which would have taken place on Friday, 24 June, at South Cape College, has been moved to Saturday, 25 June at De Jager Indoor Sport Centre due to the increased number of supporters that will be bussed from Cape Town.
