Speaker and Mayor Denounces Councillors Absenteeism from Council Scheduled Meeting

councillors absenteeism smallOudtshoorn, 11 September 2015 – The Speaker of the Greater Oudtshoorn, Cllr. Christiaan Macpherson has expressed his disappointment as chairperson of Council after an Ordinary Council Meeting scheduled for 11 September 2015, failed to quorate due to non-attendance of 12 councillors.

Cllr. Macpherson flanked by the Executive Mayor, Aldm Wessie van der Westhuizen and the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Chief Whip, Cllr. Felicity Magxaka addressed the media shortly after adjournment of the Ordinary Council Meeting that was attended by only 11 DA Councillors and one COPE Councillor. Council at the moment consists of 24 Councillors of which 10 African National Congress (ANC), one National People’s Party (NPP) and one Independent Civics Organization of South Africa (ICOSA) councillors did not attend the meeting.

“I’m very, very disappointed,” Macpherson said. “It just makes it more difficult, Oudtshoorn has been subjected to a lot of similar actions and our service delivery is definitely not on par and the issues that needed to be addressed here are aimed at rectifying that.”

Ground-Breaking Housing Project for Farm Workers launched in Oudtshoorn

farmworkers smallOudtshoorn, 08 September 2015 – The Western Cape Provincial MEC for Human Settlements, Mr. Bonginkosi Madikizela and the Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn, Aldm Wessie van der Westhuizen have launched the a ground-breaking housing project in a sod turning event held on 4 September 2015 in Spieskamp outside Oudtshoorn.

The R 14 Million worth project which is aimed at delivering housing solutions for rural residents will deliver 87 housing units at Spieskamp a farm situated about 12km outside Oudtshoorn. This project is a partnership between the Department of Human Settlements, the Oudtshoorn Municipality, ABRC Consultancy (Agri Business) and local farm owners.

Traditionally rural residents have often been overlooked for municipal housing development as they are either not included in urban housing surveys, not residing in areas earmarked for development or because the municipality is unable to install services for development on private land.

Oudtshoorn Municipality Partners with Afri-Forum in a Tree Give-Away Project

tree giveaway smallOudtshoorn, 08 September 2015 – Oudtshoorn Municipality and the Afri-Forum have as part of Arbor Day celebrations donated 100 citrus fruit trees to residents of the greater Oudtshoorn.

The first ten trees of the 100 were given away on 4 September to the newly built houses of Rosevalley. The Deputy Executive Mayor, Aldm John Stoffels and Mr. George Kersop of the Afri-Forum planted citrus trees at Rosevalley.

“Give it water, love it, talk to it,” said Stoffels to one of the beneficiaries, Rochelle Willeman (43) from Rosevalley.

Mr. Kersop told the attendees that Afri-Forum embarked on a national project to give away trees to residents. “We thought of giving away to owners of this new housing project; the different citrus fruit we give away are lemon, naartjies, and oranges.
